Healthy Holiday Tips!

Did you know that the average American will gain 7 pounds over the holiday season? This fact can send us all into a panic and make us swear off all holiday eating forever! There is definitely a way to enjoy all the yummy holiday treats and still be able to fit into all of the cute, new clothes we might be getting for Christmas. Here are some easy and helpful tips that will allow us to enjoy the holiday munchies without obsessing about any weight gain.
  1. Before going to a party where there will be food, eat a light healthy snack or meal. When you go to a party completely starved, then you will be more likely to overeat. If you stomach is satisfied, you can still enjoy a few yummy snacks without overindulging.
  2. Even though you might be crunched for time around the holidays, make time to exercise. When you do this you will have more energy to fight the crowds in the mall and to participate in all the fun holiday activities without being fatigued. Also, when you are routinely working out you have a tendency to eat healthier.
  3. Try portion control. This allows you to sample everything just in smaller amounts. That way you don’t feel like you are missing out on anything or depriving yourself of your favorite holiday treat.
  4. Think about avoiding empty calories or high calorie drinks. Try drinking water or tea instead of punch or cider with a meal or at a party and this will free up hundreds of calories. This way you have saved up calories for dessert.
  5. Have fun and enjoy! This season comes around only once a year and it is definitely a time for us to enjoy family and fellowship. Focus on having fun and not sweating the 1-2 lbs that will be easy to get off after all of it is over.
